: At the outset I would like to express my appreciation for Prof. Ives's
: insightful virtual keynote address.

Actually, the "address" was real -- the medium was "virtual"!

His concerns about the nature of the net
: promoting (in a discussion group or conference format) seeming simple
: queries and unqualified, incomplete responses, while valid, are, I think, no
: different from what I have seen in conventional conferences or dialogs. In a sense
: the net, in view of the anonymity it affords, promotes an intellecutally
: more honest and open discussion.

: Of course, we can sanguinely hope that such open discussions will bring out
: at some point a technically credible and accurate response. In this sense, I do think
: that the net offers a significant advantage. Also, once the surfers get used to the
: water temperature and the wave lengths, ideas will flow easier and the surfing smoother.

Wow! This is a virtual storehouse of mixed metaphores!!@!
