The definition or calculation of the area of a corroding rebar or rebar probe is not straightforward and adds to the problems in making these measurements in a "quantitative" manner.
While the surface area of the ribbed portions can be incorporated relatively easily, decisions on whether to include only the upper rebar half (at least in the early stages of attack), what area should be specified in the case of cracked concrete, what the real corroding area is in the case of localized attack etc. etc. are much more difficult to make, or simply impossible.
The uncertainty over the rebar area again makes these techniques essentially qualitative or "semi-quantitative" only. Correlations of electrochemical data with actual rebar damage are needed to place greater confidence in such electrochemical results.
