Non-destructive Inspection for Corrosion
Systems that handle potentially corrosive media can be subject to several types of degradation including general and localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Even in systems which corrosion is not expected as a result of laboratory evaluation or field monitoring can exhibit corrosive attack or cracking in certain locations. It is important to have a well planned and regular inspection program which can locate problems well before failure can occur. Several commonly available NDI methods can assist in inspection of metallic components and equipment. These include methods based on the following techniques:
- Magnetic Particle or Dye Penetrant Inspection -Location of surface connected defects and crack
- Ultrasonic Inspection - Location and sizing of internal defects and cracking and for section thinning.
- Acoustic Emission - Location of active cracks sites.
- Eddy Current - Location of surface or near surface defects and cracks.
