Socrates Steel Evaluation Dialog Socrates also assists you in determining the viability of carbon steels versus CRAs through a rigorous evaluation of general corrosion susceptibility of steels with or without inhibition in the operating environment. The system determines a steel corrosion severity index, a measure of the overall corrosive severity of the environment. The steel corrosivity index is a synergistic parameter that combines the effect of different variables that influence corrosion rate in steels listed further below in this section. The corrosion severity index represents the corrosion rate in carbon steels in mpy (See Appendix II for more information about steel evaluation in Socrates). In material selection, it should be realized that conventional steels can be significantly more economical than CRAs in low severity environments or in greater severity environments when used with proper chemical inhibition. Therefore, before considering CRAs, it is important to first evaluate whether steels can be used in oil field environments without being susceptible to sulfide stress cracking. Relevant parameters in steel evaluation include:
The figure below shows the dialog box that can be accessed from the analysis menu that is used to collect data for determination of the steel corrosion severity index. Corrosion severity index is displayed as a number that is directly proportional to potential weight loss corrosion in mpy.
