Marine Environment

The ISO atmospheric corrosivity at CFB Greenwood, approximately 10 km from the Bay of Fundy, was evaluated as a function of:

Time of wetness

Sulfur Dioxide

Chlorides

Sulfur Dioxide

Sulfate data has not been collected at Greenwood and so estimates of the sulfate concentration were made from data collected at Environment Canada Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network (CAPMoN) sites at Kejimkujik Park and Jackson (see map). The above graph shows the average monthly sulfate concentrations measured over the time period 1984-1985, error bars represent the extreme measurements in each month. There is a slight increase in the sulfate concentration over the summer months but overall the sulfate concentrations would be considered to be within ISO classification Po or P1 and have minimal effect on the atmospheric corrosion of aluminum at Greenwood.

Chlorides

Chlorides were not measured at Greenwood and so estimates were taken from precipitation data collected at the CAPMoN sites at Kejimkujik Park and Jackson, the results are presented above. There is no seasonal trend in the data. The Greenwood chlorides are about ten times the measurements performed in a typical rural environment.
