Abstract

The duplex stainless steel commonly known as alloy 2205 (UNS S31803) has been successfully used in various petroleum and petrochemical applications for many years because of its relative strength, corrosion resistance and cost. A project was undertaken to develop a flexible pipe carcass with high chloride pitting resistance, high collapse strength, and moderate costs using alloy 2205. This was accomplished by control of the composition of the strip supplied to the fabricator, and by modification of the pipe forming process.

The final product supplied meets the more restrictive UNS S32205 requirements, as well as the generic UNS S31803 requirements. A flexible pipeline made using a UNS S32205 flexible carcass has been installed and has been operational for over three years of its planned 20-year life.
