ABSTRACT

The high strength superaustenitic stainless steel NirostaÒ 4565 S (UNS S 34565) has recently found high interest in the oil and gas industrie in the North Sea due to ist unique combination of high strength with excellent resistance to corrosion in chloride containing environments and to environmentally induced cracking.

The high strength — yield strength greater than 420 MPa, tensile strength greater than 800 MPa — makes it an ideal candidate material for high pressure services. As the resistance to crevice corrosion is better than that of other stainless steels it is also a promising candidate material for seawater pipes and piping components. The stable austenitic microstructure makes it easy to weld, form and fabricate this steel into the various product forms needed in the oil and gas industries.
