The paper contains a survey of applications of duplex stainless steel. The installations discussed are described as case stories and explain why duplex was selected and the experience reported. The cases selected include pressure vessels in the pulp and paper industry, chemical industries, the offshore industry, desalination and also domestic water heaters. Other areas of application include storage tanks where duplex was selected due to its superior SCC resistance and weight-saving potential. The low thermal expansion of duplex grades has also been a valid argument when selecting duplex material for different types of applications, as this means less deformation when carrying hot cargoes in road tankers and less deformation after welding when building stainless steel sailing yachts. The high absorption of energy when exposed to the impact of an explosion is described and also constructions where the superior resistance of duplex to wear and corrosion in general has been exploited.
